Advantages of Walking Gaiters
Why wear ?
Gaiters seem to have gone a bit out of fashion of late, which is a shame, as they are a really useful piece of kit.
Advantage of Gaiters
Gaiters will
· Protect your trousers from mud / snow
· Keep your legs dry on wet ground
· Help protect the bottom of your legs from insects hiding in long grass
· Help to stop water running into your boots on wet ground
· Will mean you can take of your muddy gaiters after a walk and the bottom of your trousers will be dry and clean, protecting your car / tent / pub from getting muddy.
What sort of Gaiters should I get?
This depends really on what you are likely to use them for.
Types of Gaiter
There are several types of gaiter,
Ankle Gaiters
Knee length Gaiters
Yeti Gaiters (these cover the whole boot)
I always use knee length gaiters as it gives maximum protection to your legs and trousers. They clip on at the front under the boot lace, and have a strap which goes underneeth the boot between the heel and the sole, most then zip up at the fron and have a velcro cover to protect the zip from mud and dirt. They are normally fairly easy to get on and off.
Yeti Gaiters are useful in snow and very cold weather, but I find them cumbersome and difficult to get on and off. These have a tight rubber gaiter that covers the rim of the boot, and a full fabric cover over the entire boot, these again zip up at the front.
Gaiter Fabrics
You will generally want a tough lower part to the top of the boot, this is the area that gets the most wear from being rubbed against rocks or twigs or long grass.
The upper is normally a lighter material, and it would depend on your usage as to whether you want a heavier more robust upper or a lighter upper that can be packed away.
Try to get a breathable gaiter if you are doing lengthy walks, this will avoid you ending up being wetter inside your gaiter than outside.
