Autumn & Winter Preperation
As summer draws to a close September is a great time to get out walking. There can be some great days with golden evenings, and the air gradually cools through the month.
It's now time to dig out your winter gear and ensure that it is all in good condition. There is nothing worse than trying to prepare for your first cold morning, and discovering your hat is missing, or that there is a hole in your favourite gloves.
You will probably need a larger Rucksack for the winter to get your additional spare clothing in. Some people also like to use walking poles to assist with steadying yourself on muddy or icy terrain.
Don't forget, it can be quite different walking in the winter compared to the summer. Make sure you are prepared, and reduce the length of your walks compared to the summer, it will get dark earlier, and the weather can change at short notice so you don't want to get caught out unprepared.
Also, make sure you have your Survival Bag, map of the areas, and compass, and that you know how to use them.
Some of my most memorable walking has been during the winter months. As long as you are prepared, the winter can be one of the best times to go walking
